School Visits in English

For Middle and High school students :

The Museum’s Collection
This visit traces the development of Jewish culture through the study of diverse objects documents and artworks in MAHJ’S collection spanning the Middle Ages to the 20th century.  Students gain an appreciation of how Jewish communities have preserved their traditions while at the same time adapting to and adopting the dominant cultures in the Diaspora.

The Three Monotheisms : Jews, Christians and Muslims
Jews, Christians and Muslims all claim a common ancestor, Abraham, and the same concept, monotheism.  What is unique to each religion ?  And what values, emblematic figures, and rites do all three religions share ?

A Shared Culture : Jews and Muslims
Students explore the sources and histories of the two religions and how Jews and Muslims have shared artistic traditions and customs and the dynamic exchanges between the two cultures in different moments in history.

A Shared Heritage : Jews and Christians
Jews and Christians possess a common heritage, the Bible, of which each claim to have an authentic interpretation.  What brought them to distinguish themselves from one another, and then to oppose themselves to each other over the course of history ?  Beyond their differences, what notions do Jews and Christians share ?

Celebrations and Rites of Passage
Students discover the significance and meanings of holidays in the Jewish calendar and key moments in the cycle of life and their rites through the museum’s collections of ritual and art objects.

*Guided visits are all 1hour and 30mins in duration – hands-on activities for Middle School
