Atelier proposed in English, Spanish, Hebrew, with native speaking guides

An exploration of the history of Jerusalem, a center of encounters amongst Jews, Christians and Muslims and between the Occident and the Orient. Students examine through architectural features of the city, art and ritual objects as well as other documentary source material such as maps and travel journals, the many layers of history embedded in the geography of the city and discern the central role Jerusalem has played in the forging of identities through the centuries.

Jews and Christians possess a common heritage, the Bible, of which each claim to have an authentic interpretation. What brought them to distinguish themselves from one another, and then to oppose themselves to each other over the course of history? Beyond their differences, what notions do Jews and Christians share?

Students explore the sources and histories of the two religions and how Jews and Muslims have shared artistic traditions and customs through the ages. This atelier helps revealing the dynamic exchanges between the two cultures in different moments in history.
